This bread has been made for lots of Hills family occasions, including school bake sales and for Christmas mornings with raspberry jam.
Ingredients
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 cup whole wheat flour
- 2 tablespoon flax or sesame seeds
- 2 tablespoon granulated sugar
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 1/2 cups buttermilk
- 1/4 cup vegetable oil
Topping
- 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
Method
- Preheat oven to 190C (375°F). Line baking sheet with parchment paper.
- In large bowl, whisk together all-purpose flour, whole wheat flour, seeds, sugar, baking soda, and salt
- In separate small bowl, whisk together buttermilk and oil. Add to dry ingredients all at once. Stir with fork until soft dough forms.
- Turn out dough onto a lightly floured surface.With floured hands, press dough into a ball, knead lightly 10 times. Place on baking sheet. Gently pat out dough into a 6-inch circle.
- Topping: Sprinkle flour over loaf.
- With a sharp knife, score a large X on top of the loaf.
- Bake at 190C (375°F) for about 45 minutes, until golden and a toothpick inserted into center comes out clean.
